The Real Real

I used to stalk online sample sales like it was my job, but it got really old. Being by a computer at the same time every day to race for the “it” dress of the sale became a game – a tiring, time consuming game. So, I was forced to give up my online sample sale addiction.

That was until therealreal.com launched. The site features amazing prices on top designer items in incredible condition. I’ve bought everything from Gucci loafers to a leather Celine skirt (with tags still on!) to a Vivienne Westwood blazer once owned by Paula Abdul (yes, I know!), to a Chanel coat, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. The beauty of the site is not just the game of it, but the fact that there’s only one of each thing. You can retain some uniqueness to your wardrobe while still having a nasty little habit of stalking an online sale website that not everyone and their mother frequents  – unless you’re in my family!

On top of all of that amazingness, buying things from therealreal is a green way to shop. You’re keeping old clothes out of landfills by helping the previous owners recycle them while stocking your closet with second-hand (yet sometimes never worn) garments.

Green living was a driving factor in the creation of the site. The RealReal’s Los Angeles stylist Clea Shearer reveals, “The founders are particularly interested in environmental causes and created a business that supports a green economy. Consigning previously worn clothing and accessories allows for multiple purchases of a single item – essentially designer recycling. Consignors and customers alike are actually helping the planet by participating in this eco-friendly practice.”

Not only can you upgrade your closet in a financially responsible way, but you can do so while being responsible to the planet. It’s a win-win all around. So game on, therealreal.com, game on!
